Title : Dressing the Hodegetria in Czestochowa [In the late fourteenth century Pauline brothers took custody of a painting of the Virgin and Child at their monastery on Jasna Góra in Poland. The Virgin holds the Child with her left arm and points toward him, a motif known as the Hodegetria or "She Who Points the Way" named for a famous prototype which allegedly belonged to the Hodegon Monastery in Constantinople and dated to the pre-iconoclastic era. Title : Witches, Saints, and Heretics: Heinrich Kramer's Ties with Italian Women Mystics [Heinrich Kramer is best known for the "Malleus malleficarum," which denounced women as prone to becoming witches. While disputing with heretics in Bohemia, Kramer argued that the holiness of four Dominican tertiaries in Ferrara proved the authenticity of the Church. Kramer's holy women all were given to bodily manifestations of piety, such as stigmata; but they were carefully regulated by friars. They were the mirror opposites of witches, saintly despite bodily appetites that might have led them into error. The heretics were unmoved by their example, but Kramer spread their fame even while the "Malleus" spread negative stereotypes of other women. Title note supplied by Feminae.]
